FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his enthusiasm for this unprecedented collaboration, stating, “In a divided world, FIFA and football are uniting.” He emphasized that the International Federation of Association Football Council, representing the global football community, unanimously supported the idea of celebrating the centenary of the FIFA World Cup in the most fitting manner possible. Infantino added, “In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, with three continents – Africa, Europe, and South America – and six countries – Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain, and Uruguay – welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary, and the FIFA World Cup.”

Future Bidding Considerations in FIFA

FIFA also announced that only bids from countries belonging to the Asian Football Confederation and the Oceania Football Confederation will be considered for the 2034 World Cup finals. Saudi Arabia is anticipated to bid for hosting the tournament in 2034, marking its first-ever attempt.

The Journey Ahead

The city of Montevideo in Uruguay, which hosted the inaugural World Cup match in 1930, is poised to stage the opening game in 2030. Subsequent matches will be held in Argentina and Paraguay before the remainder of the 48-team tournament moves to North Africa and Europe.

If the 2030 proposal receives final approval, Morocco will become only the second African nation to host a World Cup, following South Africa in 2010.
